Dr. Whitaker Comes To Town
We had the opportunity
to hear Dr. Whitaker speak a couple of weeks ago. For those of you
unfamiliar with this maverick MD, he is a long time practitioner of
alternative medicine who graduated from medical school in 1970 with
a very conventional education and no interest in alternatives. Several
years later a series of events convinced him that nutrition and natural
therapies had far more potential for preventing disease and restoring
health than conventional medicines blunt tools of prescription drugs
and surgery.
In 1979 he launched the Whitaker Wellness Institute Medical Clinic
to share his knowledge with patients who had been failed by conventional
medicine.
Here are some of the notes I took from his
talk :
V8 juice to lower blood pressure
Sometimes the simplest solutions
are the most difficult to find. For many years it has been known
that high levels of Potassium will have some affect on lowering
your blood pressure. Look for low sodium V8 Juice at your grocery
store and have a glass each day in order to keep Potassium levels
in your body up. Taking a 500mg/day magnesium supplement can also
help in this area.
I find v8 or
tomato juice easy to digest with a meal. In restaurants they are
usually the same price as pop! Tomato based products of any kind
(including ketchup) are loaded with goodness. Cooked tomatoes, which
are high in lycopene, (including ketchup, though high in sugar)
are especially beneficial.
Obesity on the rise
You would have to be living
under a rock to have missed all the recent reports on the increase
in Obesity, both in Canada and the U.S.. In both countries it is
up 50% over the last 30 yrs. This is a major cause of many diseases
and emotional struggles.
Dr. Whitaker
suggested the obvious that if you are overweight and you want to
loose some, cut down on the calories you consume and do aerobic
exercise that burns fat.
Also,
drink pure water when you are hungry between meals instead of having
an unhealthy snack.
A 10 minute
walk after every meal will open up your cell gates to nutrients
without insulin instead of storing them as fat molecules. Even this
small step will put you in the top 95% of active people in North
America.
Weight reducing tips include:
India's elderly
residents have the lowest rates of Alzheimer's disease in the world.
Their secret just might be Curcumin, which comes from Turmeric (the
spice that gives curry its deep yellow colour). It is added to nearly
every Indian dish partly because it contains potent antioxidants
that inhibit food spoilage.
Curcumin is Anti-Tumoral (inhibits the formation of tumors), Anti-microbial
(hinders the activity of microbes and bacteria), Anti-Hepatotoxic
(protects the liver and aids in detoxification), Anti-Hyperlipidemic
(reduces cholesterol buildup), and Anti-Coagulant (prevents blood
platelets from clumping together).
Each Anti effect has its own unique health benefits, including improved
circulation.
If you need improved blood flow try eating more Indian food and
add curry and turmeric to your home-cooked meals. Take supplemental
curcumin (often called turmeric extract)1,400- 1,800 mg/day. Look
for a product containing bromelain or piperine for improved absorption.
Laugh
your way to health
Laughing
is one of the least expensive and best methods of increasing the
quality and quantity of your life! Plus it is fun.We will be featuring
options in every issue including the odd bit of humour. The key
is to allow yourself to really "Laugh Out Loud" when you see or
hear something funny. It sets up a chain reaction to your cells
and they immediately start vibrating on a higher frequency that triggers
your glands to automatically release endorphins and you feel
good.
Here
